International Internship

Summary

My internship is located at Farfalla Pharmacy, which is one of the four pharmacies located within Sorrento, and is located in Tasso Square. Farfalla pharmacy is a privately owned pharmacy, which is co-owned by Doctors Federica and Antonella Villa, who are sisters.

At Farfalla Pharmacy, there are four pharmacists employed by Doctors Federica and Antonella and two "technicians," who help with stocking the pharmacy and helping customers during the rush.
The pharmacy is open from nine in the morning until ten at night and during their hours of operation, the pharmacists can recommend over the counter medications for simple illnesses or they can prescribe & dispense prescription medications for more serious illnesses and symptoms.
Although the four employed pharmacists and the two sister pharmacist owners are all practicing pharmacists, the two sister pharmacist owners make the final decision for larger decisions regarding the pharmacy.

 Responsibilities/ Duties/ Projects

My main responsibilities at the pharmacy include helping English speaking customers find over the counter medications and front store products. For customers with more difficult problems or who are in need of prescription medications, I will gather the relevant information and refer them to the pharmacist.

I would then take these opportunities to learn what types of medications the pharmacists would recommend based on the customer's symptoms. In addition, I was able to learn about what medications they have to offer in Italy.
In addition to helping clients, I also help stock the pharmacy's front store with different soaps, shampoos, conditioners, and various other beauty products. This helps me learn about the different brands that are offered and also learn where they are located within the pharmacy.

Project 2

PowerPoint Presentation

One of my main projects at the pharmacy was to create a store display with information regarding two beauty lines of shampoo, conditioner, and soap that is sold at the pharmacy. The display included information about the different shampoo and conditioner combinations and their uses for the hair.
I wrote the informational signs in four different languages, Italian, English, French, and Spanish, since these were the top languages that I encountered at the pharmacy.

The rationale behind this display was due to the high volume of women and men that entered the pharmacy in search for shampoo and conditioners, as well as, sensitive and non-fragrant soaps. These soaps would not disrupt their natural skin flora and cause them rashes or infections.

Project 3

Store Display

My final project for the pharmacy was a comparison of the different aspects of pharmacy between Italian pharmacy and American pharmacy.

I created a PowerPoint that highlights the differences that I have witnessed while working at Farfalla Pharmacy.

This PowerPoint is non-inclusive and only includes details about the differences I encountered while working and the differences I was able to ask the pharmacists.

I included my personal experiences in which I noticed a difference in work culture as well.
